UPDATE: “Ground Zero Mosque” Landmark Vote Today

August 3, 2010

Today, the Landmarks Preservation Commission is expected to vote unanimously against making a 152-year-old Burlington Coat Factory a protected landmark building.

The site will be used for Park51, an Islamic community center that will include a swimming pool, 500-seat auditorium, culinary school, library, art studio, childcare, and a mosque. Park51 will be located 2 blocks away from the World Trade Center site, which has made it known in the press as the “Ground Zero mosque.”

Opponents of Park51 have attempted to landmark the former Burlington Coat Factory located on the Park51 building site in order to stall or halt construction.

Tempers have been high on both sides of the debate. One side is claiming that the center will be disrespectful to those who died in the World Trade Center attacks while the other side says that the center will bring reconciliation and show that America still cares about religious freedom.

As stated before, Benjamin James Real Estate is not officially taking a stance on the debate, but we are interested in what you think about Park51 and today’s vote. Leave a comment and make your opinion heard!

UPDATE:

The Landmarks Preservation Commission has voted 9-0 against landmarking the building, so Park51 is expected to move ahead with construction.
